How can furniture for public spaces be more versatile?

The URBAN TREE is a modular bench concept based on an aluminum extrusion. The add-ons are produceable as extrusions as well and can be sled onto the profile from each side. A spacer between the modules keeps their position and prevents the rail from plugging with dirt. Once finished setting up the base module is sealed with a cover and plugs with mechanical barbed hooks.

The starting point of this projects was the production technique. How can we (with Danny Stoermer) design a multipurpose bench concept that accomodates adaptability as well as an easy and cheap manufacturing process?
